The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP)

The UCDP, at Uppsala University in Sweden, records data on ongoing violent conflicts from 1946. Its definition of armed conflict – “a contested incompatibility that concerns government and/or territory where the use of armed force between two parties, of which at least one is the government of a state, results in at least 25 battle-related deaths in one calendar year” – is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied. The UCDP publishes datasets on armed conflicts and organised violence including data on the incidence, duration, location, actors involved in and number of recorded battle deaths, in addition to data on peace agreements.
