Yemen is the least developed country in the Middle East, ranked just 133 out of 169 in the 2010 Human Development Index.

Since 2004 Yemen has experienced ongoing conflict and displacement as a result of tensions between the government and separatist groups in the north and south. Yemen has become a target of intensified international political attention, linked to concerns about Yemen-based al-Qaeda activity. With growing interest in the area, humanitarian aid to Yemen more than doubled from US$35.6 million in 2008 to US$73 million in 2009.

Yemen experienced further political turbulence in 2011 as pro-democracy demonstrators inspired by other Arab Spring uprisings brought domestic and international pressure to bear on President Saleh. Following clashes in the capital Sanaa, which displaced thousands, the injuring of the President in a rocket attack and a UN Security Council resolution calling for a peaceful transfer of power, President Saleh agreed to transfer power to his deputy in late 2011.
